Missing in Action?

The Regina Leader-Post is usually the medium of record for coverage of local arts events so it’s a bit odd there’s not a whiff about the Mayor’s Arts and Business Awards event in either today’s paper or its website. The 4th annual ceremony was held yesterday with the city honouring its artistic talent as well as corporate supporters of the arts.  Some of the category winners received cash prizes including $2500 for the top emerging artist.

Perhaps my judgement is coloured slightly because I did some media work for the event but I’m surprised the Leader-Post did not even report on the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ given to one of Saskatchewan’s best known writers and playwrights, Ken Mitchell of Regina.  Perhaps, we’ll see one of those advertised page displays in the future with the award winners but in this case, the Leader-Post was certainly surpassed by other media in the city who provided coverage of the awards.

Here are the winners:

Emerging Artist Award: Daniel Maslany, actor, composer, sound designer, film maker and teacher

Excellence in Arts Management: Brenda Cleniuk, Director of Neutral Ground

Innovation in the Arts: Artists Sheila Nourse and Jeff Nye, Lane Level Projects

Corporate Support of the Arts: Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life
Sustained Support of the Arts: Lenora Berg, volunteer with the Regina Little Theatre
