MEDIA CLASS

I began teaching ‘Understanding the Media’ in April, 2007 through the Centre forĀ Continuing EducationĀ at the University of Regina. The class explores how and why print, broadcast and digital media select, develop and present their stories. Local journalists and media personalities discuss their daily challenges and decisions, and answer questions from participants. A wide range of subjects is examined including fairness and balance, ethics, interviewing, news versus opinion, crime reporting, political, investigative and international journalism. Topics and guest journalists change with each semester.

My students have much life experience and are big consumers of the media and current events. They’re smart, curious and willingly engage guest journalists in discussion. In fact, journalists find the class quite stimulating. By all accounts, students say the same; perhaps because there are no tests. I hope you’ll join us for the next session but remember to register early, if possible!
